Centennial Hires Megan Langenfeld as New Head Softball Coach

Centennial is bringing one of the most decorated athletes to ever come out of Bakersfield back home.

Megan Langenfeld, a Centennial High School graduate, has been named the Golden Hawks’ new head varsity softball coach. The hire brings national championship experience back to the same program where Langenfeld built the foundation for one of the strongest athletic careers Bakersfield has produced.

Before returning to Centennial, Langenfeld spent years coaching at the Division I level, including a stop at Oregon, where she served as an assistant coach for the Ducks. Her coaching résumé also includes time at Stanford, UC Riverside and Arkansas, giving Centennial a coach with experience across multiple major college softball programs.

As a player, Langenfeld’s career reached the highest level of college softball. She starred at UCLA from 2007 to 2010 and helped lead the Bruins to the 2010 Women’s College World Series championship. She capped that run by earning WCWS Most Outstanding Player honors after one of the most dominant performances in the history of the event.

Langenfeld was a two-time first-team All-American, a three-time All-American overall, a four-time All-Region selection and a four-time All-Pac-10 honoree during her college career. In 2010, she was also named Pac-10 Player of the Year and was later inducted into the Bob Elias Kern County Sports Hall of Fame.

Now, she returns to Centennial with a rare blend of local roots and national-level experience. For the Golden Hawks, the hire is about more than adding a recognizable name. It gives Centennial a coach who has played for a national championship program, coached at the Division I level and understands what it takes for athletes from Bakersfield to compete beyond Kern County.

Langenfeld’s return also gives the next generation of Centennial softball players a direct example of what is possible from their own campus. From Centennial to UCLA, from the Women’s College World Series to the Division-I coaching ranks, her career has already carried Bakersfield’s name across the country.
