Garces Star Eden Coughran Returns From World Championships With Bronze Medal

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Earlier this summer, Garces Memorial standout Eden Coughran left Bakersfield with the opportunity to represent the United States on one of water polo’s biggest stages.

She returned home a bronze medalist.

Coughran helped Team USA finish third at the 2026 World Aquatics U18 Women’s Water Polo Championships in Tenerife, Spain, capped by an 8-7 victory over Hungary in the bronze-medal match on Aug. 23. Coughran opened the scoring just one minute into the game as the United States secured its place on the podium.

It completed an impressive tournament for the Garces senior.

Coughran scored three goals in Team USA’s 14-10 semifinal loss to Australia, tying for the team lead in one of the biggest games of the tournament.

She also scored twice in a 14-2 win over China and added two more goals in an 18-6 victory over Croatia during group play.

For Coughran, competing internationally gave her a new perspective on the game.

“International water polo is much more physical,” Coughran told BSN. “The game moves fast, and every player has an elite water polo IQ. The international style allows athletes to work through adversity instead of relying on the referee to make a call.”

The atmosphere also stood out.

“One of the biggest differences was the fanfare,” Coughran said. “The stands were packed, and the crowd was extremely loud.”

That was something Coughran had been looking forward to when BSN first spoke with her in June after she was selected for Team USA. At the time, she said she was excited to experience the energy surrounding international water polo and compete in front of large European crowds.

Once the tournament ended, there was not much time to settle back in.

Coughran returned to Bakersfield with the Garces season already underway.

“I arrived home at 10 p.m. and was back at practice the next morning at 6:30 a.m.,” Coughran said.

Her attention has now shifted from Team USA back to the Rams, where she hopes the experience gained overseas can help more than just her own game.

“I hope to use my experience from this tournament to lead my team with a strong mindset and bring out the best in my teammates,” Coughran said. “Of course, I want us to win another CIF title.”

With a young Garces roster around her, though, Coughran is thinking beyond wins and championships.

“My main focus is leaving behind a legacy of excellence,” she said. “I want to share my tactical knowledge, game IQ, and core values that will help my teammates not only in water polo, but also in life.”

Earlier this summer, Coughran left Bakersfield to test herself against some of the best young water polo players in the world.

She came back with a bronze medal, international experience and one final high school season to leave her mark at Garces.
