Garces Water Polo Star Eden Coughran Selected to Represent Team USA at U18 World Championships
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Eden Coughran’s rise continues.
The Garces Memorial water polo standout has been selected to represent Team USA at the U18 World Championships in Tenerife, Spain, earning a spot as one of just 15 athletes in the nation chosen for the roster.
For Coughran, a Class of 2027 Cal Berkeley commit, the moment was both surprising and emotional. She first learned the news after a friend and teammate texted her congratulations.
“I checked my inbox and saw that I had an email with the news,” Coughran said. “I am very ecstatic and humbled to be chosen among such elite athletes. To represent my country is the greatest honor.”
The selection adds another major milestone to an already impressive resume. Coughran was named the 2026 BSN Water Polo Player of the Year, Garces team MVP in 2026, CIF Division II MVP, and helped lead Garces to a 2025 Central Section championship.
Now, she will have the opportunity to take her game from Bakersfield to the world stage.
Coughran began playing water polo in fifth grade and quickly fell in love with the physicality and competitiveness of the sport. Over time, the game became more than just competition. It became a place where she learned grit, resilience, teamwork, and the value of fully committing to something with everything she has.
“It has taught life lessons such as grit, resilience, teamwork, and the importance of fully committing to and pursuing anything with 100% effort,” Coughran said. “More importantly, I truly value the friendships and connections I have made along the way. Although water polo won’t last forever, the friendships and memories made on this journey will stay with me forever.”
Coughran’s upcoming trip to Spain will be about more than travel. It will be a chance to compete against some of the best young players in the world and experience the sport in a place where water polo carries a different level of energy.
“First and foremost, I cannot wait to compete,” Coughran said. “International play is very different, and it is exhilarating to have the opportunity to experience it. Also, the fanfare is next level in Europe. Water polo is one of the most popular sports there, so I cannot wait to play in front of the huge crowds.”
She also said she is excited to experience Spanish culture and explore while representing the United States overseas.
As Coughran prepares for the world championship stage, she is also hoping to receive support from the Bakersfield community. Her family will begin fundraising soon to help with the costs connected to the trip, and she hopes her journey can help bring more attention to water polo locally.
“Community support is everything,” Coughran said. “On a broad scale, I want to help grow this sport and bring pride to Bakersfield. Personally, having the support of my community could make it possible not just for me but also for my family to experience a world championship.”
For Bakersfield, Coughran’s selection is another reminder that elite athletes are coming from right here at home. From a Central Section champion at Garces to a future Cal athlete and now a Team USA selection, Coughran is proving that local talent can compete on any stage.
