Liberty Pulls Off Overtime Thriller
Liberty opened its season with one of the wildest finishes of the week, rallying to defeat Clovis East in overtime.
Clovis East jumped out early, connecting on a pair of deep passes to take a 12-3 lead. The Patriots answered before halftime when Denwood found the end zone, cutting the deficit to 12-10.
Liberty took its first lead in the third quarter when Valverde connected with Gavin Williams on a 49-yard touchdown.
Williams struck again in the fourth quarter, catching a wide receiver screen from Valverde and turning it into a house call.
Clovis East answered late to force overtime, but Liberty had the final word.
Valverde found Williams once again in overtime to give the Patriots the lead. When Clovis East got the ball back, the visitors went to the air looking for an answer. Darrion Washington stepped in front of the pass for the game-sealing interception.
Williams finished with three touchdowns, while Valverde accounted for three touchdown passes. Buckey added two sacks, and Graham finished with 12 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.
Liberty will host Menlo-Atherton next week.
