Week 2 High School Football Preview: What to Watch Across Kern County

Week 1 gave us our first real look at the 2026 high school football season.

Some teams immediately made statements. Bakersfield erased a two-score deficit to win on the road. Liberty survived an overtime thriller. Foothill looked explosive. Kennedy picked up where it left off after a championship season. North, Shafter, Highland, Ridgeview, Taft and Golden Valley all opened with wins.

Now comes Week 2, and the schedule brings a much better opportunity to start separating opening-night performances from real trends.

Some teams are facing immediate measuring-stick games. Others are trying to prove their Week 1 success is sustainable. Several are simply trying to avoid an 0-2 start.

Here is what BSN will be watching across the Week 2 slate.

Thursday

Kennedy at Tulare Union

BSN Prediction: Kennedy wins

This has a strong case to be the best matchup involving a local team this week.

Kennedy opened its season with a convincing 30-7 road victory over San Joaquin Memorial and did it with the same physical identity that helped carry the Thunderbirds through last season.

Isaiah Feathers rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Jorge Avila added 126 yards and two scores on 19 attempts.

The depth behind them was impressive too.

Nate Hernandez added 76 rushing yards and Christian Fuentes contributed 74, giving Kennedy several different options in the backfield.

Then there is Anthony Lara.

After recording 19 sacks last season, Lara started 2026 with three more in Week 1 and helped force another fumble.

Tulare Union also enters at 1-0 after putting up 48 points in its opener, making this a much better measuring stick for a Kennedy team replacing important pieces from its championship roster.

What to watch: Kennedy's ability to control the game on the ground.

If the Thunderbirds can consistently stay ahead of the chains and keep Tulare Union's offense on the sideline, they have a strong chance to leave with another road victory.

This feels like a one-possession game.

Friday

Bakersfield at Lancaster-Paraclete

BSN Prediction: Bakersfield wins

Bakersfield already proved it can win a difficult road game.

The Drillers fell behind 14-0 against Clovis before battling back for a 17-14 victory, eventually winning on a late field goal.

Defense played a major role.

Edward Leach finished with 12 tackles, while Dee Lee recorded six tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks. Kaiden Hastings provided an explosive offensive contribution with two receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Week 2 should tell us a little more about the offense.

Bakersfield does not necessarily need to completely change its identity, but the Drillers would like to avoid spending another game asking the defense to keep them within striking distance.

Paraclete enters at 0-1 after struggling offensively in its opener.

What to watch: Can Bakersfield take control earlier?

The Drillers showed resilience in Week 1. Now the next step is putting together a more complete four-quarter performance.

BSN gives Bakersfield the edge because of what its defense already showed on the road.

Menlo-Atherton at Liberty

BSN Prediction: Liberty wins

Liberty may have discovered one of the area's most dangerous passing combinations in its season opener.

Sophomore quarterback Luke Valverde completed 14 of 26 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns in his first varsity start.

All three touchdowns went to Gavin Williams.

Williams finished with six catches for 209 yards and became increasingly difficult for Clovis East to contain as the game progressed.

The Patriots needed every bit of it.

Liberty trailed 12-3 at halftime before rallying to force overtime and eventually winning 30-23.

The defense also produced several impact performances. Pierce Buckey had two sacks, six quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery, while Brody Stevens recorded 12 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

Menlo-Atherton will provide another quality non-league test.

The Bears reached a state championship game last season and should arrive in Bakersfield with enough talent to make Liberty work for everything.

What to watch: How Menlo-Atherton adjusts to Gavin Williams.

Williams is no longer a surprise.

If the Bears devote extra attention to him, this game could reveal more about Valverde's ability to distribute the football to other weapons.

Liberty gets the edge, but another slow start could make this interesting.

Wasco at Garces

BSN Prediction: Garces wins

This matchup features two teams coming off losses but plenty of offensive production.

Wasco lost a high-scoring opener to Monache despite several standout individual performances.

Aiden Hulsey rushed for 238 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.

Moroni Carranza finished with 153 receiving yards and three touchdowns, while Joe Montanez completed six of seven passes for 153 yards and all three scores.

The Tigers' issue was not a lack of offense.

Turnovers and tackling problems allowed Monache back into a game Wasco had controlled early.

Garces also enters looking for its first win after falling 24-17 at St. Joseph.

Quarterback Markis Gomez completed 23 of 33 passes for 256 yards, while Carter Hanson and Colby Dilly each scored rushing touchdowns.

The Rams also had one final opportunity late before St. Joseph closed the game out.

What to watch: Garces' ability to contain Wasco's two primary weapons.

Hulsey can wear down a defense on the ground, while Carranza can completely change the game with only a few touches.

Wasco's challenge is just as clear. The Tigers have to tackle better and protect the football.

Garces gets a slight edge at home, but this has the potential to become one of Friday night's best games.

Frontier at St. Joseph

Frontier probably faced one of the toughest opening assignments of any local team.

Clovis North overwhelmed the Titans in Week 1, leaving Frontier searching for a response.

Unfortunately, the schedule does not become easier.

St. Joseph just defeated Garces 24-17 and showed it can win a competitive game against a quality opponent.

This is less about judging Frontier by one difficult result and more about seeing how the Titans respond to it.

What to watch: Frontier's first quarter.

The Titans cannot afford to allow another quality opponent to build confidence early.

Establishing the run, protecting the football and forcing St. Joseph to earn its points would go a long way toward making this a competitive game.

St. Joseph gets the advantage based on its Week 1 performance and home field.

Centennial at Clovis East

Centennial gets a difficult assignment for its first complete game of the season.

Clovis East may be 0-1, but the Timberwolves showed plenty in their overtime loss to Liberty.

They consistently generated explosive plays through the air, built a 12-3 halftime lead and had an opportunity to win before Liberty completed its comeback.

For Centennial, the biggest challenge may simply be getting settled into the game quickly.

What to watch:

Clovis East repeatedly attacked Liberty vertically in Week 1.

If Centennial can limit those explosive passes and force longer drives, the Golden Hawks have an opportunity to control the game.

Independence at San Bernardino-Cajon

BSN Prediction: Independence

Independence enters Week 2 in an unusual position.

The Falcons did not get the opportunity to play a complete opener, so this road trip will essentially serve as their first full test of the season.

There is plenty of talent on the roster.

Joseph Millan takes over at quarterback, while Jahki Ervin and Rayland Denweed give Independence experience in the backfield. Defensively, Damarious Johnson gives the Falcons a player capable of impacting a game in several ways.

The challenge is simply getting comfortable quickly.

What to watch: Independence's start.

The Falcons do not have the benefit of a full Week 1 game to identify and correct mistakes.

A clean first quarter, particularly with ball security and defensive communication, would go a long way.

BSN gives Independence a narrow edge, but this is one of the tougher games to project.

Shafter at Tehachapi

BSN Prediction: Shafter

Shafter looked explosive in Week 1.

Luis Santana needed only eight carries to rush for 206 yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Collyn Gillies completed 10 of 13 passes for 141 yards and three scores.

Alex Reyna caught two touchdowns, while Kyle Pitter added a touchdown reception and 70 receiving yards.

The Generals finished with 283 rushing yards as a team.

Now they take that offense up the mountain.

Tehachapi will likely want a much different type of game.

The Warriors traditionally prefer a physical, possession-oriented style and will try to prevent Shafter from creating the explosive runs that repeatedly hurt South.

What to watch: Shafter's explosiveness on the road.

If Santana consistently reaches the second level again, Tehachapi could have difficulty keeping pace.

The Generals showed too much offensive balance in Week 1 for BSN to pick against them here.

North at Pioneer Valley

BSN Prediction: North, Big.

Robert Rodriguez rushed for 183 yards and four touchdowns as the Stars scored 46 against Stockdale.

Perhaps even more encouraging was how North created those numbers.

Four of the Stars' five starting offensive linemen were playing their first varsity game, yet the group still protected sophomore quarterback Ethan Dockery and consistently opened running lanes.

North built a huge lead before allowing Stockdale to make the final score much closer.

That creates an obvious focus heading into Week 2.

What to watch: North's defense.

The offense already showed it can score.

If the Stars can become more consistent defensively, particularly after taking a lead, this could become a very dangerous team.

North enters as one of BSN's stronger picks this week.

Highland at Stockdale

This could be one of the better local games Friday night.

Highland opened with a 28-7 road victory over Porterville.

Quarterback David Farrow accounted for a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown to RJ Davenport.

Sophomore Leon Rodriguez delivered one of the week's biggest defensive plays with a 95-yard pick-six.

Stockdale lost 46-34 to North, but quarterback Kruz Corona showed the Mustangs can move the football.

Corona threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns while Stockdale rallied after falling into a large deficit.

What to watch: Corona against Highland's secondary.

Stockdale's offense is dangerous enough to make this competitive.

The key is avoiding another slow start and protecting the football.

South at Ridgeview

BSN Prediction: Ridgeview

The matchup is fairly straightforward.

South struggled to contain Shafter's rushing attack in Week 1.

Now the Spartans have to deal with Travion Stocker and Darryon Casteel.

Stocker rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns against East.

Casteel added 138 rushing yards and two more scores.

Together, the two accounted for 334 rushing yards.

Ridgeview's defense also intercepted East three times.

What to watch:

If Ridgeview consistently gains five or six yards early in the series, the Wolf Pack can control the entire game.

South has to find a way to create negative plays and put Ridgeview behind schedule.

The matchup favors Ridgeview's strengths.

Foothill at Chavez

BSN Prediction: Foothill

This may be the most important measuring-stick game of Week 2.

Foothill opened the season by beating Mira Monte 49-10 and looked dangerous in essentially every phase.

Ismael Ramirez completed all eight of his passes for 131 yards and four touchdowns.

Jordan Neilson caught four passes for 78 yards and three scores.

Michael Hanks, Cory Hunter and Braydon Holford also found the end zone.

Chavez enters 1-0 after opening with a 35-0 shutout.

That makes this matchup particularly interesting.

Foothill has an offense that looked extremely difficult to stop.

Chavez has a defense that has not allowed a point.

What to watch: Ismael Ramirez when things are not perfect.

Week 1 could hardly have gone better.

If Chavez can create pressure or put Foothill into longer down-and-distance situations, we should learn more about how Ramirez and the Trojans respond.

Foothill gets the edge because of its number of offensive weapons.

Boron at McFarland

BSN Prediction: McFarland

Two 1-0 teams.

Boron opened with a strong defensive performance and showed it can control a game on the ground.

McFarland also enters undefeated and has plenty of experience in its rushing attack.

This game could be decided by whichever team handles the other's ground game better.

West at Delano

Both teams are looking for their first victory.

West struggled defensively in Week 1, particularly against the run.

Delano also lost its opener but showed some offensive promise, including production through the passing game.

This feels like a much more manageable matchup for both programs than what they saw in Week 1.

What to watch: Which defense makes the bigger improvement.

Both teams should believe this is a winnable game.

The first team to consistently get off the field on third down may ultimately decide it.

Taft at Del Oro

BSN Prediction: Taft

Joe Weber is back.

Taft looked excellent in its opener.

The Wildcats shut out Morro Bay 35-0 behind a huge performance from Garrett Massey.

Massey rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

Chris Bethel threw two touchdown passes, while Taft also scored on special teams.

And the Wildcats did all of that without Joe Weber.

Weber, a BSN Top 50 player to watch, is expected back after missing Week 1 while working his way back from an offseason injury.

Del Oro, meanwhile, allowed Golden Valley to rush for 387 yards in a 34-0 loss.

That creates a difficult matchup.

What to watch: What Taft's offense looks like with Weber back.

Massey's emergence gives the Wildcats another legitimate weapon.

If Taft continues running the football effectively, Del Oro may have difficulty preventing another long night.

East at Kern Valley

BSN Prediction: East

Both teams enter at 0-1, making this an early opportunity for somebody to get into the win column.

East lost 30-12 to Ridgeview but did make things interesting in the fourth quarter before the Wolf Pack pulled away.

Kern Valley also enters after a Week 1 loss.

What to watch: Which team establishes confidence first.

East showed some late offensive momentum against Ridgeview.

If the Blades can carry that into the opening quarter, the complexion of this game could look very different.

BSN gives East a slight edge.

Golden Valley at Atascadero

The Bulldogs shut out Del Oro 34-0 and rushed for 387 yards as a team.

Raymond Valderrama picked up where he left off last season, rushing for 148 yards and two touchdowns.

The performance also gave new head coach Dimas Reza III a victory in his debut.

Week 2 should provide a much better measuring stick.

Atascadero also enters 1-0, meaning Golden Valley immediately gets an opportunity to prove that Week 1 represented real progress rather than simply a favorable matchup.

What to watch: Golden Valley's running game against a stronger opponent.

The Bulldogs do not need another 387-yard performance.

If they can consistently establish Valderrama, control possession and stay out of obvious passing situations, they have a legitimate chance to win on the road.

Atascadero gets the slight edge based on home field. We’re rooting for GV.

One game can create excitement.

Two games can start creating a trend.

By the end of Week 2, the 2026 Kern County football picture should begin coming into much better focus.
